DUI is a common criminal offense in Georgia. This doesn’t mean it isn’t a serious one or one that shouldn’t be taken very seriously, just that it is charged on a daily basis by people across this state, very few of whom are dangerous criminals. A DUI can turn into something far more tragic when an accident occurs, however.

Point in case, 23 year old Macon man, Ian Andrew Nichols will serve 8 years in prison for a DUI accident that resulted in a death. Last May Nichols was driving under the influence when he was involved in an accident that killed 21 year old Brittney Higdon. read more

This weekend the Georgia’s Gwinnett County Police will be ramping up their presence in an effort to control and prevent criminal activity. This is a common occurrence that many police departments do in times of high crime. However, the Department insists this is not due to the recent crime wave and was planned before hand.

Police will be out in larger numbers as they strive to “neutralize” crime in the area. According to this article from the Atlanta Journal Constitution Police spokesperson Cpt. Illana Spellman states, “The goal is make contact with citizens in residential and commercial areas and to also neutralize any criminal activity.” read more

Unlike DUI courts in other Georgia counties, the Fulton County DUI court is struggling to survive. Because of funding the program only takes on 3rd offense DUI suspects and they must volunteer for the program. This means there aren’t many takers which translates to even less funding in a vicious circle.

According to this piece in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, those people who participate in a DUI court like the one in Fulton County are 3 times less likely to get another DUI conviction than those who go the traditional route.
