Atlanta is a rising epicenter in the underworld of Mexican drug trafficking. As this report from U.S. News explains, it is a perfect location for a centralized depot of money and drugs to pass through for distribution along the east coast. Unfortunately, where these drug cartels are found, extreme violence usually follows.
While Atlanta has yet to see the high levels of violent spillover that plague areas of Texas and the Southwest, officials fear it won’t be long as the location continues to gain popularity as a distribution center.
The article states that in 2008 officials seized more drug related cash in Atlanta than any other region in the country. This $70 million dollars obviously only represents a small fraction of the money being passed through the area. As drugs are distributed up the coast, money is returned to Mexico and the cartels behind the massive drug operations.
The people behind this massive operation are blending into hard working Hispanic communities in Atlanta, bringing crime and drugs closer to everyone’s back door. A few instances of violence that resembles these cartel’s extremely torturous ways have popped up and officials believe there will only be more as the operations expand and get more people involved.
Drug offenses are common in every state in the country, but these type of crimes are more rare. Simple possession and even distribution are nothing compared to the huge “business” of drug trafficking from Mexico into the U.S.
The majority of people arrested in Georgia for drug offenses are not working directly with the Mexican drug cartels and actually likely have no knowledge of them either. Regular hard working people are charged with minor possession crimes everyday and need an experienced attorney looking out for their best interests.
